Heattreatment ofwoodwasscientifically studied by Stammand Hansen in the 1930sin Germany and byWhitein the 1940sin theUnited States.In the 1950s, Germans Bavendam,Runkeland Buro continued research into thesubject.Kollman and Schneider published theirfindingsin the 1960s,andRuscheand Burmesterin the 1970s. More recently,researchworkwascarried outin Finland, Franceand theNetherlandsin the 1990s. Themostcomprehensiveresearchworkwasconducted byVTT(Finnish StateResearch Center)in Finland. ThermoWood ismanufactured using amethod developed byVTT. Thewoodmaterial is heated to atemperature ofatleast 180 degrees Celsiuswhile itis protectedwith steam. Besides providing protection,thesteamalso affectsthechemical changestaking placein thewood.Asaresult ofthetreatment,environmentally-friendly ThermoWood iscreated.Itscolour darkens, itismorestablethan normalwood in conditions ofchanging humidity and itsthermal insulation propertiesareimproved
